Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP)

ISTDP is a unique form of psychodynamic treatment that brings about a rapid reduction in emotional symptoms and is specifically designed to resolve anxiety, depression, somatization, and personality disorders, as well as alleviate a variety of self-defeating behaviours.

First Responders

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment

ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects one's ability to learn and interact with others. Our team is trained to use the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), an empirically validated ASD assessment tool. Following best practice, we use the ADOS-2 in conjunction with other assessment measures to diagnose ASD across the lifespan from ages three years to adulthood.

To meet the growing demand for ASD assessments, we are now accepting new referrals. Our office efficiencies and collaborative approach mean our team completes assessments within weeks of receiving a referral instead of remaining on a waitlist of several years.

Psychoeducational Assessment

Psychoeducational assessments offer a comprehensive profile of an individual's academic, cognitive, and social development relative to same-aged peers. Such evaluations serve to identify neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ADHD, specific learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia), and intellectual disabilities.

This information is then used to inform recommendations in both an educational and personal setting.

First Responders

Medically Unexplained Symptoms

Some individuals experience symptoms such as back and muscle pain, tiredness, numbness, heart palpitations, dizziness, or stomach problems that, despite numerous medical investigations, go undiagnosed, sometimes for years. Treating the psychological component can therefore treat the physical responses.

Dissociative Seizures

Those experiencing dissociative seizures may have dealt with them for years without having ever known. It is estimated that psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) are diagnosed in 20 to 30% of patients seen for epilepsy. Psychological treatment can eliminate or reduce the frequency and severity of PNES.

Treatment-Resistant Depression

For some, depression persists for an extended period of time, despite various forms of treatment. Dr. S. Gerald Hann and his team have a proven track record of helping clients who have thought depression might be untreatable.

Telehealth services are more convenient for many clients, particularly those living outside of the Halifax area. Telehealth can also be provided to residents of the other Atlantic Provinces via a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) amongst the Canadian Atlantic Provinces Psychology Regulating Boards.

Dr. Hann and his team utilize secure video-conferencing, electronic consents, record management, and booking, and remote payment methods that seamlessly deliver effective and evidence-based treatment and assessment for most mental health concerns.

Telehealth Services

Dr. Hann offers training and supervision services for those seeking licensure in psychology. Professional development and supervision in intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP) for practicing mental health clinicians is also offered and includes didactic components and video analysis of the clinician’s treatment with clients.

Anxiety Therapy

In recent years, Halifax, Nova Scotia, has seen a significant increase in anxiety levels among its residents, a trend that continued in 2023. One of the main triggers for increased anxiety in Halifax has been financial stress. A report found that two in five people feel stressed or anxious due to inflation and higher interest rates. This financial anxiety is part of a broader national trend, with Canadians affected by inflation showing higher self-rated anxiety (33%) and depression (32%), as well as higher rates of a recent diagnosis of a mental health disorder.
